About Sports Therapy

Sports Therapy is an aspect of healthcare that is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability.

It utilises the principles of sport and exercise sciences incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare the patient for training, competition and day to day activities.

Although some physiotherapists focus on sports-related cases, sports therapy and rehabilitation is a separate profession, requiring a seperate 3 year intense study at university. It is concerned with musculo-skeletal conditions arising from physical activity, not with general healthcare or disease.

To sum up the work of a sports therapist:

  • Diagnose
  • Treat
  • Rehabilitate
  • Prevent injuries
